Our day started pretty well with breakfast downstairs in the bar (well at least the area where the bar is) and got off to a 9.00AM start. Went to the TI for some additional info on local walks and found the map for the “wall” walk, a walk with views across the canal, shopping areas, and the arena. The first two excellent with the hand dug canal through rock even, and the main shopping precinct having quite a few frontages in an almost black and white Bavarian.style architecture.
Pauline in the Chester Roman amphitheatre- no lions, just standing where the goddess used to be ???
The Roman arena, which was known from historical records to have existed in Chester was not excavated until 1929 when a building contractor with nouse was excavating for footings and came across this curved wall, the original arena inside perimeter with apparently worldwide architectural interest. Whilst not much of the original 7000 seat arena remains the outline is quite distinct. The walk on the wall was an excellent precursor to the arena visit, the wall having excellent plaques noting the functions of the gates (arched entrances used by tax collectors for traders bringing in their products by ship or dray).
There was a “fair” on with the dominant music featuring the local ukulele groups with music and song, very entertaining.
The old city wall and the canal.
Very fortunate to have a Tesco right next door for lunches etc at rapid accessibility and reasonable prices and they sell beer and wine as well!
Had a fairly quiet day (Sunday) and as the internet access is dear as poison decided to pass on that and do copy and paste blog work in Word. Working my way through the backlog. Pauline came back from her foray into the shops with something for Noah.
